Of all skin infections, dermatitis is one of the most diverse, with numerous external risk factors that can affect children and adults. It is usually related to exposure, ingestion, or direct contact with certain chemicals that cause some kind of irritation or allergy manifested through rash, itching, redness and peeling.
The reaction does not always manifest at the first contact with the allergy-causing substance, so the causes must be investigated before directing treatment. When dermatitis extends for more than six weeks, it is considered chronic. The good news is that it offers no risk of death, nor is it contagious.
Causes of dermatitis include contacts with aluminum chloride soaps, detergents, cosmetics, perfumes and deodorants, costume jewelry, insecticides, plastics, rubber, food and plants. In some cases they are intensified by the sun. In babies, so-called diaper allergy is common.

These tests to identify causes of allergy consist of applying 30 substances to small aluminum blades, which are fixed to the patient’s back for 48 hours. When they are withdrawn, it takes another 48 hours to make the diagnosis because there are late allergies that take time to manifest. If the patient has developed an allergy to some of the 30 substances tested, the skin of the site that was in contact will have a reaction.
