Spots

The spots and signs that spread over the skin of the body over the years, especially in the areas most exposed to the sun, are called melanocytic nevi by doctors.

They are called this because they are small benign tumors formed by melanocytes, which are the cells that produce the melanin pigment, responsible for skin and hair color.

Regularly shaped, salient or not, melanocytic nevi arise from genetic predisposition, even though they are a skin reaction to the accumulation of sunlight over the years.

Other types of spots and signs are called atypical nevi, or dysplastic nevi, which are less common and may look like melanoma. They have a larger appearance, are irregular and can have various brownish tones.

Recent research has shown that people with ten or more dysplastic nevi are 12 times more likely to develop melanoma, which is the most aggressive type of skin cancer. The trend is also genetic and serves as a warning for the need for daily use of sunscreen, self-examination and regular visits to the dermatologist.
